Texas law makes license plate changes for disabled veterans in 2022

A new state law will impact Texans with disabled veteran license plates who want to park in disabled spaces in 2022.

According to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, as of January 1, anyone parking in a handicapped space must have a handicapped license plate or parking plate that features the international symbol for access.

Prior to the new law, license plates for disabled veterans did not feature the ISA, but all Texans with these plates could park in handicapped spaces.

“Currently, any vehicle with a disabled veteran license plate can use a designated disabled parking space. However, there are a limited number of ADA spaces,” said Robert Dembo III, director of the veterans office. Who is eligible for a plate with the ISA?

A placard or plate is valid only when used by the disabled person or by a person driving the disabled person.

How to Apply for Plates with the ISA

Texans with disabled veterans plates who want to use disabled parking spaces beginning in 2022 can apply for a disabled parking plate or a new disabled veterans license plate from ISA s they meet the eligibility requirements for an ISA after January 1. , 2022, according to TxDMV.
