Softball set to host Texas State for weekend series

CONWAY, South Carolina – The Coastal Carolina softball team is looking to get back into the win column as the Chanticleers are set to host Texas State at St. John’s Stadium for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series, March 25-27.

The first game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET on Friday. Notably, Sunday’s game was moved to a first pitch at 11:30 a.m. ET.

CCU enters the weekend 12-14 overall and 1-5 in conference, while TXST holds an overall record of 14-13 and an SBC record of 2-4.

Coastal returned to Sun Belt action in Arlington, Texas against UT Arlington March 18-20. The Chanticleers gave up all three games of the weekend series to the Mavericks.

On their second road trip of the season, CCU fought but failed against UTA.

Coastal fell to UT Arlington 11-5 on Friday, before falling 5-2 on Saturday and Sunday both days.

On the plate, Makiya Thomas led the offensive effort for the Chants over the past weekend as the grad student finished the series hitting .455. In 11 at bats, the Tacoma Washington native recorded three runs, five hits, three RBIs, two doubles and a home run. Notably, she also drew a walk.

Texas State faced a foe of the state on Wednesday and Texas ranked No. 23 nationally. The Bobcats hosted the Longhorns in San Marcos and lost the game 4-2.

After Hannah Earls’ infield single, Sara Vanderford hit a two-run home run over the left field fence to give the host team a 2-0 lead.

Texas tied the game in the top of the third inning with back-to-back doubles. In the top of the seventh inning, the Longhorns took control after a five-pitch walk and a two-run homer from McKenzie Parker to make the final score, 4-2.

In the circle, Jessica Mullins (9-9) suffered the loss for TXST pitching a full game and at the plate, Vanderford led the offensive effort going 1 for 2 while recording a run, a hit and two RBIs .

Coastal Paths in the series 2-9, with Texas State holding a three-game winning streak against the Chants. The two schools first met on March 11, 2017, a 5-4 win for the Bobcats in 8 innings and most recently faced off on April 2, 2021. Texas State came away with a 3-2 victory .

CCU’s last victory over Texas State came on April 14, 2019 – a 12-2, 5 inning outing for the Chants.

The Chanticleers have hit 40 total home runs while their opponents have only hit 27. So far this season, 10 different Coastal players have homered. Roose leads the offensive effort for Coastal as the true freshman has recorded seven homers. Riley Zana and Iyanla Of Jesus are tied for second in the home run, as each has had six home runs this season.

Montoya Abbey recorded five. Payton Ebersol (4), Maddy Jennings (4), madison hudson (4), Makiya Thomas (2), Jay Wrightman (1), and Abby Jankay (1) also contributed to Coastal’s home run count.

Including this weekend’s series, 21 of CCU’s 29 total games were played at St. John Stadium. The Chanticleers are 10-8 overall at home this season.
