Houston falls to Texas State on Sunday


HOUSTON− The Houston softball team lost to Texas State 8-2 in the final day and final game of the Houston Classic on Sunday afternoon.

Right-handed pitcher Kenna Wilkey pitched 4.0 innings and recorded two strikeouts, but was flagged in the loss.

senior red shirt Hannah Todd came in for the final 1.1 innings and recorded two strikeouts after the Bobcats (5-3) drove in fifth and sixth innings multiple times to pull away late from the Cougars (4-6).

In the first inning, a sacrifice fly gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. A single by Texas State first baseman Dani Elder doubled the Bobcats lead to 2-0 in the top of the third inning.

first baseman LA Matthews picked the middle down in the third inning and brought in the third baseman Ja’Naiya Thomas to put the Cougars on the board.

In bottom of fourth, second baseman Becca Schulte scored on a single from the right side by the left fielder Bethany Busch to tie the score at 2-2.

Bobcats third baseman Sara Vanderford reached home plate on wild pitch before a right side single from catcher Cat Crenek scored another run to regain a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth.

After a scoreless frame for UH in the fifth inning, Texas State scored another run on a single by designated player Anna Jones. On the next bat, Elder hit a 3-run homer to extend the lead to 8-2.

Matthews and Busch held the bats hot with two hits apiece on the day.

The softball team returns to action Feb. 25-27 at the Houston Invitational with its opener against Northern Colorado on Friday, Feb. 25 at 3:30 p.m.
