Governor Abbott Reappoints Southwest Collection Archivist to Texas State Historian

Governor Greg Abbott reappointed Monte L. Monroe, Ph.D. as Texas State Historian for a term that expires October 5, 2024. Monroe is responsible for increasing public knowledge of history rich and diverse state, encourage the teaching of Texas history in public schools, consult with state leaders to promote Texas history, and make presentations on history topics from Texas.

Monte L. Monroe, Ph.D. of Lubbock is the Archivist of the Southwest Collection and a faculty member at Texas Tech University. As a member of the West Texas Historical Association and former editor of its scholarly journal, he has presented, taught, and published widely on Texas history. Monroe has served on the Texas Historical Records Advisory Board, the boards of the West and East Texas Historical Associations, is chair of the Texas State Historical Association Archives Committee, is a member on the executive advisory board of the Handbook of Texas Women Online, is a fellow of the Philosophical Society of Texas, and is a past board member of the Texas Map Society. He is a founding board member of the Humanities Center at Texas Tech, president of the Rotary Club of Lubbock, president of the Meriwether Society, Inc., and currently serves as president of the Rotary Club of Lubbock Foundation. He was previously Secretary General of the Pan American Taekwondo Union, International Master Instructor and International Taekwondo Referee, and refereed the sport at the Olympic Games in Seoul and Barcelona. Monroe received a Bachelor of Arts in Literature and History from Stephen F. Austin State University and a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in History from Texas Tech University.
