LAKE CHARLES — McNeese Softball will continue its Texas road trip when it travels to the Houston Classic this weekend Feb. 18-19 to take on No. 1 Oklahoma, Houston and Texas State.
The Cowgirls (5-1) suffered their first loss of the season Wednesday night under the gloves of No. 11 Texan (5-1).
McNeese will open the tournament against five-time national champion Oklahoma (5-0) Friday at noon.
The Cowgirls faced Oklahoma twice in 2015 and 2019, with the Sooners leading the series 2-0.
The last time the Cowgirls beat the number one team in the nation was in the 2012 season when the Cowgirls defeated Arizona State 3-1 at the Kajikawa Classic. The winning pitcher was Tiffany Denham who is the older sister of the freshman assistant coach Alyssa Denham.
“Any time you can beat one of those teams, that’s great. Any time you play a program that’s traditionally been a big team, you know you’ll be tested to the max,” the head coach said. . Jacques Landreneau. “We are training to play against the best and we will have that opportunity twice this weekend.”
After Oklahoma in Friday’s action, the Cowgirls take on hometown Houston (4-1) at 6 p.m.
The Cougars and Cowgirls have traded wins since 2006 with McNeese leading the overall series 8-7. Last season, the Cowgirls swept the Cougars in home and home competition.
Saturday, the Cowgirls will challenge Texas State (2-1) at 10 a.m. before facing Oklahoma a second time at 12:30 p.m. to close the tournament.
Since the Bobcats left the Southland Conference in 2012, the two teams have met twice (2015, 2017), narrowly beating the Cowgirls by one point in both contests.
The Cowgirls will return home to host the Evangeline Bank and Trust Invitational II from Feb. 24 to Feb. 24. 27.
